FAQs RAIL TRACK BALLAST

What is Rail Track Ballast?

It is a layer of crushed rock which is used around and beneath railway sleepers. This material provides stability and support to the tracks structure which ensures safe train movements.

Why is Rail Track Ballast important?

Ballast helps distribute the loads caused by train loads, and maintains the alignment of the track which helps keeps the trains safe. It allows for water drainage too. Ballast plays a critical role in prolonging the lifespan of our railway network. Our aggregates can be used in the building of new rail lines, terminals, sidings and freight yards across Manchester and around the UK.

What materials are used in railway ballast?

There are stringent requirements for railway ballast, and materials are selected and specified based on their strength and resistance to weathering. Our certified Track Ballast is Network Rail approved granite material which hit the criteria detailed in BS EN 13450 Aggregates for Railway Ballast.
